Starring, Guardian Alien, and The Demix at Cactus Club
Starring’s debut album, Wife Of God, begins with billowing smoke clouds of reverberating psych-rock dread and only gets rougher from there. Pterodactyl drummer Matt Marlin and Skeleton$ keyboardist Mike Gallope body-slam their respective instruments and create the most recognizable noises among the bunch, leading the Brooklyn five-piece through a vocal-wrenching, music-blurring wind tunnel. Some may call it “psych-rock” or “prog,” but all the mind-shattering noise makes it difficult to determine the effects on the psyche, and the mashed-up vocal howls obscure any technical proficiency. Still, the intensity is there, and it blasts any shortcomings right over the top. A new album, the delightfully titled ABCDEFG-HIJKLMNOP-QRSTUV-WXYZ, was released earlier this summer.
