Sleepy Sun, Castle Thunder, and Moss Folk at Cactus Club
California’s Sleepy Sun lays down swirling tracers of epic acid-rock rumble and pastoral acoustic reflection with equal aplomb, only to later subvert all expectations with a piano-driven, Neil Young-esque ballad like “Lord.” The group’s debut, 2009’s attention-grabbing Embrace, slips from bluesy fuzz to psychedelic meandering to heartbreaking harmonies often within the same song. 2010’s Fever soars with even bigger arrangements, carried by throttling guitars and eddied vocal harmonies. It’s more revision than revival, making for a rapturous haze that engulfs and entrances. The band’s third record, Spine Hits, was released in early April.
