Passion Pit and Mayer Hawthorne at The Riverside Theater
Passion Pit’s first single, “Sleepyhead,” was a dreamy bit of electro-pop, impossibly dense but perfectly leavened by frontman Michael Angelakos’ high-pitched warble of a voice. It all but guaranteed interest in the band’s debut, Manners, which came loaded with songs to buoy late-night dorm dance parties well past quiet hours. Also buoyed: Passion Pit’s fortunes. “Sleepyhead” currently appears in a television commercial for Palm, and the band of late has been making the festival circuit and playing increasingly large venues like Riverside Theater. Recalling the smoother, sensual side of the Motown sound, Mayer Hawthorne (née Andrew Cohen) makes 21st-century soul sides that sound so convincingly retro, they initially flummoxed Stones Throw Records head Peanut Butter Wolf. But Wolf was so taken with Hawthorne's mix of buttery falsetto, vintage production techniques, and breakbeats that he released A Strange Arrangement last year.
