Ivy Spokes, The Small Cities, and Calliope at Stonefly Brewing Company

The Minneapolis-based indie-poppers of The Small Cities are a likable lot. At the forefront of this affability are strong, hooky melodies and an innately smart sense of composition. The four-piece knows how to put together pop songs, and it’s whip smart with harmony, too. The Small Cities’ four-track, self-titled EP from a few years back showcases all of this, from the sunny “Fargo” and guitar-heavy “Trust Me, I Am Not A Stalker” to the slower “I’m Gone” and “This City.” The vocal-heavy sounds of The Small Cities are calculated and well executed, and there’s a mature neatness to the band’s songwriting, enough to get listeners hoping for more of the same on the band’s full-length, With Fire, to be released in March 2012.
