Heartless Bastards and Peter Wolf Crier at Turner Hall Ballroom
Despite their more straightforward take on rock than what's typically associated with Mississippi shack-blues outlet Fat Possum Records, Cincinnati’s Heartless Bastards inked a deal with the label thanks to some kind words from The Black Keys' Patrick Carney. The group incorporated slivers of pop, folk, and even sparse, lazy orchestral arrangements on 2006’s All This Time, while 2009's The Mountain was deftly recorded with Spoon producer Mike McCarthy and a whole new band backing Wennerstrom. Portland’s The Builders And The Butchers are a young group steeped in folk tradition, as last year’s Salvation Is A Deep Dark Well regales the listener with stories of life, death, and all the labors in between with rousing banjos, plinking mandolins, and flourishes of Spanish horns. Peter Wolf Crier’s newest, Inter Be, has a simultaneously ethereal and rugged home-recorded sound that will undoubtedly draw legions of comparisons to Bon Iver, but it possesses bewitching qualities entirely its own.
